Ingrown toenails
Ingrown toenails occur when the corner of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. This can be caused by:
•Incorrect cutting of the toenails
•Injury to the toenail such as stubbing the toe, or dropping a heavy object on it
•Wearing shoes that are too small
If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can become painful, red or infected often impacting mobility. Enclosed footwear becomes uncomfortable and even the bed sheets can cause unbearable pressure!
Ingrown toenails are a common problem, and our podiatrists are often able to quickly and successfully treat them. In severe cases, or with chronic recurring ingrown nails, we can conduct a minor in-room procedure under local anaesthetic with the aim to have a permanent result.
This procedure is called a nail avulsion with matrix sterilisation and can be either partial, or total.
Additionally we are accredited users of the BS Brace – where a brace is glued onto the affected nail, using tension to help it grow away from the corners.
